Joe Siracusa
Health & Safety

Joe Siracusa has a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined OPG in an engineering capacity and during his 41 years of employment, Mr. Siracusa worked at all the major coal fired plants in Ontario, as well as the corporate office. Mr. Siracusa held numerous senior positions in Plant Management, Production, Engineering, and Business, and was a member of the Executive Team. He was also on the advisory board of two CCGT facilities in Ontario. Mr. Siracusa also served on the EPRI Generation Council, helping to assess the power industry’s direction and extending guidance for future research.

Health and Safety Management – Best Practices
A health and safety management system can provide an organization with the necessary guidance to build a framework for preventing workplace injuries and illnesses, improving compliance with laws and regulations, engaging workers, proactively managing workplace health and safety risks, and improving health and safety performance. This report defines a proactive approach to managing workplace health and safety using industry best practices and consistent with international standards. This guideline should allow an organization to build on and improve their existing health and safety management system.

Contractor Management Workshop
Contractor safety programs are critical for electric utilities, as they are designed to protect not only the company and contractor employees, but also equipment and facilities from the possibilities of injury, accident, or loss. The objective of this workshop was to help CEATI members enhance safety knowledge and skills, improve contractor selection and prequalification processes, and refine incident reporting and investigation.

This workshop centered on electrical safety best practices, viewed through a causal factor lens. Representatives from CEATI member organizations shared case studies of incidents, leading to discussions on lessons learned and program changes implemented to prevent future occurrences.

Applying ergonomics principles and guidelines correctly to physical work not only improves the health and wellness of employees but can also improve the health and wellness of the business. This webinar highlights some of the unique challenges faced when applying ergonomics in the electric utilities sector. The session addresses approaches to overcome those challenges from both program and task-specific levels, as well as how to position ergonomics as a valid business improvement tool.

Handling Workplace Violence
Workplace violence refers to any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at a worksite. It can affect and involve employees, clients, customers, or visitors. Hence, OSHA’s recommendation for employers to establish and maintain a violence prevention program made available to all employees. In this webinar, a representative from one of CEATI’s member organizations presents on how their organization handles violence in the workplace, as well as their security mitigation strategies.
